Western Character, Desert Roads, Easy Drive
Cave Creek and Carefree sit in the desert foothills about 30 miles north of Scottsdale — close enough for a casual half-day, different enough to feel like a genuine escape. Cave Creek is the wilder of the two: a western-flavored town with saloons, live music, leather shops, and a main street that looks like it belongs in a different era. Carefree is its quieter neighbor — planned in the 1950s with streets named after sun and sky, anchored by a 35-foot sundial that's been telling time since 1959.
The drive north from Scottsdale on Cave Creek Road or Scottsdale Road passes through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and into the Sonoran Desert foothills — saguaro-lined roads, desert washes, and the Bradshaw Mountains visible to the north. It's one of the most pleasant short drives in the Valley.
This route pairs well with a Bartlett Lake extension — continue east on Carefree Highway from Carefree to Bartlett Dam Road for a full-day adventure.

Starting point: Old Town Scottsdale (exact pickup address provided after Turo booking)
Scottsdale → Cave Creek (Cave Creek Road North)
Head north on Scottsdale Road or Cave Creek Road. Both routes pass through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and into the desert foothills. About 25 miles, 30 minutes.
Cave Creek Town Center
Cave Creek Road becomes the main street through town. Park near the Buffalo Chip Saloon or Frontier Town. The town center has restaurants, bars, galleries, and western shops. Easy walking.
Cave Creek → Carefree (Easy Street)
From Cave Creek, head east on Cave Creek Road to Carefree. The two towns are about 3 miles apart. Carefree's main intersection is at Easy Street and Ho Hum Road — the street names are part of the town's original 1950s character.
Carefree Town Center
The Carefree Sundial anchors the town center. The surrounding shops and galleries are worth a walk. The Carefree Desert Gardens are a pleasant stop.
Return to Scottsdale
Return via Scottsdale Road south, or loop back via Tom Darlington Drive to Pima Road for a different return route.
Best Stops
Buffalo Chip Saloon
Cave Creek's most famous bar — live country music, cold drinks, and a crowd that's been coming here for decades. Open daily from 11am.
Frontier Town
A western-themed shopping and dining complex in Cave Creek. Restaurants, galleries, and the kind of atmosphere you can't find in Scottsdale proper.
Carefree Sundial
The 35-foot sundial in the center of Carefree has been telling time since 1959. The surrounding plaza has shops and restaurants.
Carefree Desert Gardens
A free public garden with native desert plants, walking paths, and mountain views. Pleasant stop any time of year.
Cave Creek Regional Park
Desert wilderness park north of Cave Creek with hiking trails and panoramic views of the Bradshaw Mountains.

Free street parking throughout Cave Creek and Carefree. The towns are small and walkable.
Food and Drink
Cave Creek has excellent restaurants and bars — Tonto Bar & Grill, Horny Toad, and Buffalo Chip Saloon are local favorites. Carefree has more upscale dining options.
Spring Wildflowers
February through April, the desert foothills around Cave Creek and Carefree are covered in wildflowers — Mexican poppies, lupine, and brittlebush. One of the best wildflower drives in the Valley.
Weather
Cave Creek sits at about 2,000 feet — slightly cooler than Scottsdale. Year-round driving is comfortable. Summer afternoons can be hot but mornings are pleasant.
